May 12: Saints Nereus and Achilleus were Roman soldiers who were martyred for converting to Catholicism. Saint Pancras was a Syrian boy who was martyred at age 14.
May 14: The Greek name “Matthias” means “gift of Yahweh”. Saint Matthias was chosen to be the replacement of Judas Iscariot. Matthias later gave his life for Our Lord.
May 15: Isidore married a young woman as poor and as virtuous as himself, but after the early death of an only son, they decided to serve God in perfect continence.
May 16: Saint Brendan of Clonfert is thought to have embarked on his famous seven-year voyage with sixty companions, looking for the “Land of Promise”.
May 17: From age seven to twenty-four Saint Paschal tended sheep, and early on showed signs of a great passion for the Holy Eucharist. Though little educated, through his prayer life Paschal reached a high degree of spiritual wisdom.
May 18: Pope St. John I was a holy pontiff who suffered the wrath of an evil king who supported the Arian heresy.
May 18: Saint Eric was the devout Catholic King of Sweden. This did not sit well with his pagans in his kingdom. He was slain in battle by pagan rebels with the help of Danish insurgents.
May 19: Saint Dunstan, most famous of the Anglo-Saxon saints, was born near Glastonbury of a noble family. From early on, Dunstan showed signs of religious and academic fervor, and demonstrated a remarkable artistic talent.
May 20: When the Plague ravaged the city of Sienna, the 20 year old Bernadine volunteered to take charge of the hospital with another ten companions.
May 24: Saint Vincent of Lérins was considered a “a man pre-eminent in eloquence and learning." His written works helped the Church tackle many heretical interpretations of the Scriptures.
